WRITTEN IN THE MARGINS

I hope I’m the love interest in your story
the reason you’re a little late,
the reason you took extra time to get ready,
the one you still haven’t asked out on a date.

I hope I make you a little nervous,
wondering, “What’s the perfect thing to say?”
I hope you wake up each morning
hoping you’ll see me throughout the day.

I hope you check your phone often,
hoping for a message to come through,
and yet feel secure, knowing
my words will always find their way back to you.

I hope you have a crush on me
the kind that keeps you up all night,
gushing to your friends about how
everything suddenly feels right.

I hope you’re saving cute pictures of me,
whispering, “Oh God, her beauty never ends…”
I hope you write about me in secret,
with lyrics that carry my name to your friends.

I hope you scream to the universe,
“Nobody will ever make me feel the same!”
I hope I’m the one who keeps
your heart from playing its old games.

I hope I’m the pretty girl
you wish had grown up next door.
I hope I’m the second glance
“How did angels slip into the store?”

I hope I’m the love interest,
the “too good to be true,”
the “just right on time,”
the “my whole life I’ve been waiting for you.”
